Belgium has two distinct media markets – one French-speaking, the other Flemish. In these small markets, publishers continue to integrate their operations and focus more on digital platforms, though many still struggle to find sustainable revenue models.
Weekly consumption of print is significantly down again this year and has fallen by 12 percentage points in five years. Many Belgian publishers are still dependent on print revenues and the COVID-19 pandemic will have made the situation worse. Meanwhile, smartphone news use has overtaken computers for the first time.
